No Crystal Stair: The Photography of John Simmons

In this centennial year of DeCarava’s birth, the exhibition No Crystal Stair: The Photography of John Simmons, A.S.C. features images selected from Simmons’ vast archive of photographs from the 1960s and 1970s to pay homage to DeCarava’s The Sweet Flypaper of Life. The exhibition uses the prose from Langston Hughes’ poems Mother to Son and Let America Be America Again to add texture and to further expose the enduring profoundness of Simmons’ early photographs.
